Less than 10 years into his 20-year jail term, the former Director-General of the Cameroon Radio and Television, CRTV, Gervais Mendo Ze is said to be on the verge of losing his life.
Incarcerated at the dreaded Kondengui Prison in Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde, reports say the former choir master’s health keeps deteriorating by the day.
Once lively and jovial, he is said to have almost lost his voice as well as his bubbling spirit.
In what many believe to be one of long-serving President Paul Biya’s moved to silence any possible competition, Mendo Ze, who served as CRTV Director-General from 1988-2005 was arrested in November 2014.
Accused of embezzlement among other charges, Mendo Ze and several others were slammed with heavy jail terms.
Penitentiary authorities are yet to make any official comments on the politician’s health situation, as well as plans for his possible evacuation abroad for medical care.
