Former French colonies in Africa meet to discuss autonomy, democracy

Cameroon’s president, Paul Biya and wife, Chantal will tomorrow take part in an international conference organised by Congolese president, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The conference is set to mark 60 years of independence of French African colonies and the 80th anniversary of the participation of African troops in the liberation of France in 1940.

The Presidential couple will be accompanied by an intermimisterial team, consisting of external relations minister, Lejeune Mbella Mbella and a host of others.

While in a working visit to the Unity Palace in Yaounde months back, Sassou Nguesso’s envoy told the press that talks will centre on the autonomy and promotion of democracy in former French colonies.

But most leaders in these countries have clung on to power for several decades, and being accused of election rigging.

Can former French colonies, finally take a decision against French interference?
