Former Muyuka Hospital Director Takes Rape Conviction to Supreme Court

The former Director of the Muyuka District Hospital in Cameroon’s South West Region, Dr. Kingsley Eban, has escalated his legal battle to the Supreme Court of Cameroon.

This move follows a recent decision of the Buea Appeal Court, which reduced his initial 18-year prison sentence for rape to nine years.

The case dates back to May 21, 2021, when Dr. Eban was accused of sexually assaulting an intern in his office.

In October 2022, the Fako High Court in Buea found him guilty of rape and indecency to a minor, sentencing him to 18 years in prison.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Dr. Eban appealed to the South West Court of Appeal.

In a recent judgement, Magistrate Tatsi Theophilus of the Buea Appeal Court acknowledged procedural and legal errors in the initial trial.

While affirming Dr. Eban’s guilt, the court reduced his sentence from 18 to nine years.

Unconvinced by this outcome, Dr. Eban has now petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking a complete overturn of his conviction.

Dr. Eban maintains his innocence and is determined to clear his name to restore his professional reputation and standing in society.

His appeal has been formally submitted, and proceedings at the Supreme Court are scheduled to commence in mid-January 2025.

This case has garnered significant public attention, highlighting issues of sexual misconduct and the legal processes surrounding such allegations within Cameroon’s medical community.
