Former Secretary of State Jean Marie Aleokol Passes On

Jean Marie Aleokol, a prominent figure who served Cameroon in various capacities, passed away early Sunday, June 30, 2024, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Aleokol was a former Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defense, overseeing the National Gendarmerie. Before his passing, he held the position of chairman of the board of ARSEL, the electricity regulatory agency.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service

Born in 1947 in Lomie, East Region, Aleokol graduated from the prestigious National School of Administration and Magistracy in Yaounde. He furthered his studies at the Institute of Higher National Defense Studies in Paris.

In 1978, Aleokol embarked on his public service career. His initial appointment was as Head of the Educational Personnel Management Service at the Ministry of Public Service. The following year, he became Head of Studies in the same ministry. Soon after, he received a promotion to Deputy Director of General Administration within the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries, and Animal Industries.

In 1983, Aleokol transitioned to the General Directorate of SONEL in Douala, serving as Deputy Director of Personnel. A pivotal period in his career began on April 14, 1989, when he was appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense, a position he held until December 8, 2004. He then rose to the rank of Secretary of State to the Minister of Defense, overseeing the National Gendarmerie, from 2004 to 2007.
