Former UN official, Dr. Simon Munzu says 20th May was a great deception organised by Ahidjo regime

The Former United Nation’s Secretary General’s Special Representative for Ivory Coast, Dr Simon Munzu has watered down the importance of the national day in Cameroon.

As an Anglophone Cameroonian, Dr Simon Munzu has suggested that it is a day most Anglophones would not want to remember for how they had been robbed on this day.

According to Dr. Simon Munzu, “…20th May was a great deception organized by President Ahidjo, together with some Anglophone politicians and civil servants. this day does not deserve to be remembered, let alone celebrated as our national day.”

The senior law expert equally believes that the supposed referandum which institutionalized the transition of Cameroon from a Federal state to a Unitary state was a farce, manipulated by the Ahidjo regime in 1971 to assimilate Anglophones.

Dr. Simon Munzu does not equally think it is useful to celebrate the transition of Cameroon to a Unitary State, since to him, it is just a form of the state, and all countries do have it, but don’t celebrate it as their national day.

“except in Cameroon, where do citizens of other countries celebrate the form of their country as their national day,” he quizzed.

Dr. Munzu nevertheless believes it made more sense before the Unitary state when Southern Cameroonians celebrated their independence every October 1st, and East Cameroon every January 1st. between 1961 aand 1971 similarly, Cameroonians together celebrated their reunification which to Dr. Munzu made much sense.

“…In contrast however, what is there to be proud of in celebrating the 20th of May in Cameroon?” he questions.

To him, it was the day the foundations of the Federal Republic was destroyed by the regime in Yaounde.

Dr. Munzu says this day marked the start to the program of domination, and marginalization of the Anglophones.

Seemingly too, the purpose for this day to the Senior Law Expert has never been achieved, as the national unity to this day remains an illusion.

The new form of the state 50 years after has aided to rather divide Cameroonians rather than unite.

In essence, Dr. Simon Munzu has proposed a return to the Federal system of governance, which to him will solve the problems faced in Cameroon today.

He said this form of the state will “…help us to consolidate reunification, and promote integration among our various communities.”
