Free Surgery for 16-year-old Raises Questions About Access to Health Care

By Njoh Linda

A 16-year-old boy who lived with a severe congenital condition affecting his lower limbs has undergone surgery at Yaoundé Central Hospital, following his referral through Cameroon’s 2026 health campaign.

Ali Bouba received free surgical treatment from a team led by Dr Georges Bwele. Public Health Minister Dr Manaouda Malachie visited him at the hospital on October 19 to assess his condition and the follow-up care provided after the operation.

According to information released about his case, the adolescent’s condition was so severe that he had reportedly been unable to see his own genitals since birth, highlighting the profound physical consequences of the illness.

His surgery follows the fifth edition of the 2026 health campaign organised by the Ministry of Public Health in Cameroon’s Far North Region, during which more than 4,800 patients were reportedly operated on.

While the campaign has provided access to surgery for patients with significant medical needs, Ali’s case raises broader questions about the availability of specialised healthcare, early diagnosis and the timely treatment of congenital conditions in Cameroon.

Elephantiasis is characterised by severe swelling, often associated with damage to the lymphatic system. Although some cases result from lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic infection, others are linked to congenital abnormalities.

Establishing the precise cause is essential to determining appropriate treatment and preventing complications.

For Ali, the operation marks an important step, but surgery alone may not resolve every aspect of his condition. His long-term recovery will depend on appropriate medical follow-up, rehabilitation where necessary and access to any additional treatment required.

The Ministry of Public Health has presented the campaign as an opportunity to extend access to care for people who might otherwise struggle to obtain treatment.
