From Buea to the world with obsession for smart solutions: Akum Bate Atiaboh’s journey to WiCon

Akum Bate Atiaboh, an Industrial Electrician, trained and certified in Dubai, UAE is obsessed with providing smart solutions to problems in the community and beyond.

After serving as an electrical technician with Al Laith scaffolding, Mass Climbing Division in Dubai, Akum returns home to create his own start-up technology company, WiCon.

“I love technology and innovation so much so that I hope to live my whole life striving to let it affect my community, country, and the world at large in a positive way,” Akum tells Mimi Mefo Info.

He says he seeks to harness smart solutions to everyday challenges faced in society. “Most especially in my sector which is the electrical engineering; in the domain of domestic electrification, I am obsessed to bring into existence all kinds of smart solutions,” he says.

He says his journey to the creation of his company, WiCon started in September 2019.
“I started my research on trying to create an innovative and modern electrical wiring and switching system for homes, offices, and hotels, as a result of the fact I have been obsessed to bring a change in the electrical community than just continuing with the traditional and conventional methods of domestic electrification,” said Akum. “So I thought it was high time I started working on such a project to modernize the old techniques of home wirings and switching so to see it come true someday.”

With the little resources he had – a computer and an Arduino microcontroller board, Akum started work, and a month later managed to design a system that could be operated with the use of remote control to switch on lights and some electrical appliances such as table lamps, and fans among others.
Akum says he tried out the technology in a couple of homes in Dubai and it worked perfectly.

How words: “I named the system ‘WiCon Box’, and as days passed by, I kept working on developing the system. I did this in my spare time given that I was working. From then, WiCon became my dream and I wanted to do everything I could to accomplish this project and see it come to reality. I looked forward to it being implemented and accepted in big cities like Dubai where I started WiCon.

“I tried to contact some of my engineer and developer friends back home in Cameroon with whom I shared the idea. They loved it and were all prepared to work with me on it to see it come true as well. Thus, the research and development of the WiCon Box now had two fronts: in Dubai by me and in Cameroon with my new team members. The team in Cameroon included Eng. Mbua Peter and Eng. Awonjia Serge.

“On February 18, 2020, I left Dubai for Cameroon to continue my work for WiCon as per my decision taken to make sure that I do everything possible within my power to see my dreams for WiCon come true. So I started WiCon in Dubai and brought the vision for execution in my country Cameroon.

“Today I am proud to present to you WiCon Systems BOX and the WiCon Mobile App and what it has become.
