GCE Board Registrar, Akuh Dominic, journeys home

The late Registrar of the Cameroon GCE Board, Dang Akuh Dominic, has been buried in the seaside city of Limbe after a funeral ceremony held at the Board’s headquarters in Buea this morning.

Over 700 people attended the funeral of the late academic, who is credited for instilling discipline and rigour at the GCE Board.

He died on September 25 in Buea, at the age of 64, after suffering a brief malaise.

Speakers at the funeral ceremony, including the Chairman of the GCE Board, Prof Ivo Leke Tambo, remembered the late Registrar for reforming technical and vocational education (TVE) and for his steadfastness during a crisis period.

He developed the syllabus of the technical and vocational training education and is best noted for his strict management style of the GCE Board.

Dang Akuh Dominic succeeded Humphrey Ekema Monono as Registrar in 2018, when GCE performance was at its lowest point due to the ongoing armed conflict in the English-speaking Regions.

Thanks to his strictness, the prestigious examination regained steam and recorded successive positive outcomes between 2018 and 2023.

His sudden death left a power vacuum at the institution, until the GCE Board’s North West Representative, Ndi Bernadette, stepped in.

She was appointed Interim Registrar earlier this month.

In a tribute to her late boss, she said the GCE Board is “reeling from Mr Dang’s sudden and unexpected passing”.

She described the late Registrar as “an embodiment of discipline, honour, courage and loyalty”.

Key Government Officials Absent

Many who attended the late Akuh Dang’s funeral observed, with surprise, the absence of some high ranking government officials.

The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof Nalova Lyonga, was absent from the funeral and was represented by the South West Regional Delegate, Dr Hannah Etonde Mbua.

Also, the Regional Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, was only represented by the Secretary General at the Governor’s Office, Gilbert Acha Nkwenti.

The Governor accompanied Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, to Limbe that morning for the funeral of the PM’s late brother.

The Mayor of Buea, David Mafani Namange, was also absent from the GCE Board Registrar’s funeral service.

In a tribute at the event, Mr Acha Nkwenti described the late statesman as a hardworking and level-headed man who worked closely with the South West administration.

He said the late Registrar “left a great vacuum that will be very difficult to fill”.

Also among those who attended the funeral was the Member of Parliament for Menchum South Constituency, Hon Wallang Richard.

The accompanied a delegation of elites from Mr Dang’s place of origin, Menchum Division of the North West.

Other attendees of the event included the Divisional Officer of Buea, Abba Abdouraman and the Paramount Chief of Buea, HRH Dr Mathias Esuka Endeley.

The late Registrar left behind his wife, Dang Magaret, three daughters and a son to mourn him.
