Gendarmes arrest three during crackdown against banditry in Yaounde

Gendarmes have arrested three suspected bandits who allegedly broke into a home in the Nkolbisson neighborhood of Yaounde and stole FCFA five million.

The suspects were apprehended by elements of the Gendarmerie Brigade in Nkolbisson on Wednesday, July 10.

According to the paramilitary force, the suspects were arrested after a tip-off about their whereabouts.

“Acting on information, elements of the Nkolbisson Gendarmerie Brigade arrested three individuals in the Oyom-Abang neighborhood, precisely at Snack Bar 112, at about 2 a.m. These individuals, aged 19, 20, and 25, are suspected of being involved in the robbery at gunpoint of the house of a trader in Nkolbisson on the night of July 5, 2024,” the Gendarmerie said.

The robbery resulted in the theft of six Itel brand telephones and a hefty sum of five million CFA Francs.

While the three suspects are currently being interrogated, two of their accomplices remain at large.

“The alleged criminals will be referred to the competent courts in the coming days to be held accountable,” the Gendarmerie added.

This arrest is part of a larger crackdown on banditry in the area.

Two months ago, MMI reported the arrest of several individuals, including students, who specialized in robbing operators of mobile money kiosks in the Nkolbisson neighborhood.

Since their arrest by the Gendarmerie, incidents of such robberies had not been recorded until recently when a home was targeted.
