GICAM wants economic austerity measures as COVID-19 digs in

The Cameroon Employers’ Trade Union known by its French acronym as GICAM says government review of its fiscal policy for this year 2020 is unavoidable to save the economy.

In a video conference chaired by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute Monday, July 27th, 2020, members of GICAM headed by its president Celestine Tawamba enumerated the extent to which business activities have been crippled in Cameroon as a result of coronavirus pandemic.

To GICAM, 13,384 people have lost their jobs while 53,346 others are on technical leave. This, according to the employers’ trade union, has brought about enormous disadvantages on business activities in the country that is reflected in homes.

On how to redress this, GICAM is proposing a review of tax policy to the advantage of business men to permit them recover from the economic hardship brought about by the health crisis.

PM Dion Ngute mentioned that government by holding talks with GICAM demonstrates its openness to talk with the private sector for the interest of the economy and Cameroonians.

It remains unclear the kind of measures government intends to take to save the economy.
