Global Corruption Barometer says Cameroon is fourth most corrupt in Africa

In its 2019 report, Global Corruption Barometer says Cameroon is the fourth most corrupt country in Africa. It concluded its report based on the rate of bribery in public services of the West African nation.

The studies reveals that the police, the judiciary and other related public institutions are the most corrupt sectors in Cameroon, with a leading bribery index.

Cameroon features fourth among the ten most corrupt Nations in Africa coming after the Democratic Republic of Congo 80% bribery rate, Liberia 63%, Sierra Leone 62% and Cameroon with 48% respectively.

The 2014 corruption perception index by Transparency International ranked Cameroon 136 out of 175 countries. The report found out that “the police are seen by Cameroonians as the most corrupt institution in the government.”

Corription fighting mechanisms like the national anti-corruption commission, special criminal court, supreme state audit have however not reduced the mounting cases of bribery and embezzlement witnessed daily in Cameroon.
