Government crackdown on opposition is shame to democracy – PAP leader

Despite several run-ins with the Cameroon government, the Popular Action Party, PAP is not backing down.

The opposition party’s president, Njang Denis Tabe has in a release condemned what he terms a crackdown on Kamto’s MRC party.

The PAP, a portion of the release reads, “has observed with dismay the systematic crackdown on leaders and militants of the CRM party since September 22, 2020. This is a big shame to democracy, to liberalism and a total violation of the 1990 freedom of speech and association laws.”

There is no democracy, he went on, “when opposition figures cannot freely and willingly express their democratic rights privately or publicly.”

“We join our voice to those of other Cameroonians home and abroad to extend and express our continues support and encouragement to President Maurice Kamto, Prof. Alain Fogue, Mr Bibou Nissack , Mme Mispa Awasum and all other CRM militants who have been subjected to imprisonment because of their political opinion,” he added.

The politician also predicted an end to the Biya regime, whose action, he said, “is an indication to the national and international community their unpopularity, incompetence and illegitimacy to Cameroonians. We are very confident of victory soonest, for no brutal regime has ever reigned forever.”

The recent statement comes on the heels of a number of jail sentences handed CRM militants as well as the ongoing house arrest of Prof. Maurice Kamto.
