Government Signs FCFA 113 Billion Contract to Rehabilitate Bekoko-Limbe-Idenau Road

The Ministry of Public Works (MINTP) has contracted the company ATI BONISA to rehabilitate the 93km road linking Bekoko-Limbe-Idenau in the South West Region.

The team will carry out rehabilitation works on the 10-kilometre stretch connecting Mutengene to the South West Regional capital, Buea.

Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, the Prime Minister, made a commitment a few months ago to rehabilitate the access road to the Tiko Port as part of the project.

This development marks significant progress in a process initiated in February 2024 and formalised with the signing of an MoU on May 16, 2024, in the office of the Prime Minister, Head of Government.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, the rehabilitation will cost FCFA 113,179,432,546.

During the contract signing ceremony, the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Ngannou Ndjoumesi, emphasized respect for deadline. The contract will span 12 months.

The roads slated for rehabilitation have been in poor condition for years.

Potholes litter the Douala-Mutengene-Limbe-Idenau and Mutengene-Buea roads, and inadequate drainage systems frequently result in flooding during rainy seasons.

This poor state of the roads has drawn criticism from some government officials, including the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele, and the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga.

Rehabilitation will maintain the current road width but increase pavement thickness by adding more tar.

We will also enlarge certain sections to enhance traffic flow.

This project is expected to address long-standing infrastructure challenges and enhance accessibility in the South West Region.

Many Cameroonians express concern that the Ministry of Public Works included this stretch of road in their list of over 2000 km of roads they claimed to have rehabilitated between 2016 and 2023.
