Government summons heads of teachers’ syndicates over ongoing strike action

Leaders of teachers’ syndicates in the country will tomorrow Tuesday February 22nd assemble at the Prime Minister’s office in Yaounde, it is reported.

They have been called up for a meeting with officials, barely one day into their strike action.

The teachers, most of whom so far have been those practicing in the Far North region of the country today took to their classroom blackboards to express grievances.

Prominent among their concerns, are low irregular pay and unfavourable working conditions.

Some have also said they want their arrears, salary completion, advancement and redeployment fees settled.

Expected at tomorrow’s meeting, would be the Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, the Minister of Secondary Education, Nalova Lyonga, and Labour and Social Security Minister, Joseph Owona.

Many of the protesting teachers took to their classrooms, writing ‘Craie morte’ [roughly translated as ‘dead chalk’

It remains uncertain if teachers from other institutions would join the strike action, especially those in the conflict-hit Anglophone regions, given that their classes for the week commence tomorrow instead.

It should be recalled that thousands of teachers in Ndop, North West region had their salaries blocked weeks back by the Ngohketunjia Senior Divisional Officer.

The official accused them of failing to carry out their duties. The teachers on their part raised concerns over the security situation in the division, noting that government had failed to protect them as promised
