Government to investigate abduction of journalist, Martinez Zogo

Cameroon’s Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, has said the government is looking into the adduction of Yaounde-based journalist, Martinez Zogo.

The radio animator has been missing for four days now.

In a release on Friday, January 20, Minister Sadi said the government is aware of his abduction and “is monitoring this situation with all the interest it deserves”.

“The information currently available shows that the person concerned is present, neither at his home nor at his place of work. The Government is monitoring this situation with all the interest it deserves. In this regard, instructions have been given, so that all light be made on the disappearance to date of Mr. ZOGO Martinez,” Minister Sadi stated.

He noted that the Cameroon government is doing its best to ensure freedom of the press, although press freedom reports have often ranked the country low in terms of press freedom.

“Moreover, this is the place to reiterate that the Government has always been keen to guarantee the free exercise of the profession of Journalist, within the framework of and respect for the laws and regulations in force, ethics and professional conduct that govern this profession. And in this perspective, the Government reaffirms that everything is and will always be done to preserve the freedom of the press in our country, at the same time as it appeals to the sense of responsibility and professionalism of journalists, who exercise of the noble profession,” the Minister added.

Martinez Zogo, host of a popular program “Embouteillage” on Amplitude Radio in Yaounde, was abducted by unknown men on Tuesday, January 17, on his return from work.

His abductors have said nothing about him and his communication line have since not been accessible.
