GTHS Kumbo: Teachers stranded in classrooms after receiving threats to resume teaching

Some teachers of Government Technical High School, GTHS in Kumbo have cried out against the horrendous conditions they have been exposed to.

The teachers were reportedly threatened by the Principal of the institution to resume lessons or face the prospect of losing their jobs.

The said teachers had equally seen their salaries suspended, and were in a tight spot when given an ultimatum to resume lessons.

Forced to respect the orders of the Principal, some of these teachers braved the odds and returned from their various places of refuge back to Kumbo to pick up their teaching duties.

However, most of them were not provided accommodation and security by the authorities, forcing them to spend the night in a classroom.

“We came to teach but unfortunately we didn’t have a place to sleep and there was no one to help us, not even our principal” one of them tells MMI.

“… We had no option than to use a classroom” he states further, adding that he and his colleagues “… are planning to go and see the D.O today and hear what he will tell us”.

The teachers it should be noted also have fears of being attacked by separatist fighters in Bui, for their decision to resume lessons.

Kumbo remains one of the most affected towns in the Northwest Region, with little or no pedagogic activities ongoing in the area for more than 4 years now due to the armed conflict between separatist fighters and government forces.
