Guinea Dissolves 53 Political Parties, Suspends Dozens

Guinea’s military government has dissolved 53 political parties and suspended 54 for the next three months.

Authorities also placed 67 parties under observation, and gave them three months to provide appropriate documents to the Ministry of Territorial Administration.

This follows a 180-page report the Ministry released recently after examining 211 parties in a move, it said, aimed at “cleaning up the political scene”.

“The end result is that for the 53 parties dissolved, there are illegible registrations or registrations with falsified signatures of ministers,” said Camara Touré Djénabou, coordinator of civil status reforms at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation.

Among the 67 parties under observation is Rally of the Guinean People, the party of former President Alpha Conde. In 2021, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya led a coup that ousted Conde, who now lives in exile.

Col. Doumbouya has been under pressure to restore Guinea’s membership in the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS). This, however, entails transferring power to civilians — he promised to do so by the end of this year.

Guinea is one of four West African countries under military rule, the others being Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
