Former US diplomat, Herman Cohen says Anglophone autonomy should be granted. He adds that the Biya regime has nothing to lose by making that happen.
“Cameroon government has nothing to lose by granting substantial autonomy to anglophone regions, especially language, culture, justice, and education. On the contrary, the entire nation would benefit from expanded economy and political stability,” he wrote on Twitter.
Cohen expressed pessimism on the National Dialogue, saying talks must take place in the presence of a mediator.
“I do hope that the dialogue between the Biya administration and the Anglophone separatists leads to peace. The Swiss government’s mechanism for mediation is an excellent option, which I hope both sides will assent to,” Cohen said.
Herman Jay Cohen served as United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1989 to 1993. He brokered an end to the Eritrean-Ethiopian War in 1991, and conflicts in Angola and Mozambique.
