House Speaker solicits action against Covid-19 & misunderstandings as AFCON approaches

The speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Cavayé Yegue Djibril has called for a joint action to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in the country amidst a growing variant that is apparently deadlier than the first.

Hon Cavayé Yegue Djibril was speaking at the end of deliberations for the second ordinary session of the National Assembly for the 2021 legislative year.

A total of 7 bills were scrutinized during the second session of the National Assembly, and 4 separate special plenary sittings were organized in which some lapses in the functioning of some public and private corporations were discussed amongst other things.

House Speaker, Cavayé Yegue Djibril however praised the Government’s efforts so far put in to fight and contain the Covid-19 pandemic in Cameroon, especially with the holding of the upcoming African Cup of Nations Tournament (AFCON 2021) which to him have been satisfactory.

“Government measures in response to Covid-19 have so far procured satisfactory results, the vaccination campaign is still to commence in the earnest at a time when official sources indicate that there are enough vaccines in stock…”

He also remarked that Cameroon has under the leadership of the Head of State, President Paul Biya, been endowed with tonnes of vaccines since the start of the national vaccination campaign on April 12.

Despite efforts of the state, Hon Cavayé notes that the civilians have remained largely uninterested in immunizing themselves from the virus, something which he has blamed fully as an influence of social media.

“Some compatriots continue to be lukewarm and averse to vaccination to Covid-19. Worse still, some compatriots continue to lend credence to the elaborate anti-vaccination propaganda in the social media” he stated.

To this, the speaker solicited positive press coverage as concerns the Covid-19 vaccination campaign, by stating four main benefits which vaccinated individuals stand to benefit like Protecting acquaintances, reducing the spread of the virus, and protecting the country from the new variant which has proven to be deadlier than the previous.

With regards to the upcoming AFCON tournament, the Honorable called for joint support for the Sports Ministry which is in charge of the general organization of the tournament amidst the raging pandemic.

In a reference to the conflicts that have existed between two of Cameroon’s football bodies as concerns professional football in the country, the House Speaker called for such differences to be put aside for the greater good of the nation.

“Let us shun the internal squabbles plaguing sports in general, and football in particular… Let us put an end to misinformation and propaganda ok social media…let us all exude patriotism… let us all unite to support our national team the Indomitable Lions,” he ended.
