How Professional are Professional Schools in Cameroon?

It’s no secret that the proliferation of private higher institutions in Cameroon is alarming. Taking a stroll in Buea from Mile 17 to Checkpoint, a keen eye is sure to come across more than 50 such institutions flaunting themselves as professional institutions.

Yet, the mismatch between available skills and the needs of the economy continues to be an obstacle to employment and growth in the country. This mismatch has left many wondering how professional these professional institutions actually are.

Amidst all this institutional noise, one professional private institution stands out: HIBMAT University Institute of Buea (HUIB). Over the years, providing professional education to thousands of Cameroonians has become one of the priorities of the institution.

HUIB, an accredited private Anglo-Saxon University, is among the only three University Institutes in the South West Region, recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP) and the lone University mentored by two state Universities — the Universities of Buea and Bamenda.

It’s also one of the very few institutions that prepare students for careers in the job market.

Just how professional is HIBMAT University Institute of Buea?

For starters, professional school programs help prepare students for careers in specific fields. HUIB trains the minds of its students to help them think and behave like professionals. Their programs are designed to not just impart knowledge but to help students develop the skill sets needed for the ever-evolving job market.
Free Internship Placements & Academic Field Trips

To achieve its goal of training students to have the attitude, mindset, and skills of a professional, HUIB places students on internships at reputable organizations for free. At the same time, students have the option to choose their preferred location for an internship, making it easy for them to learn better.

For one thing, placing students on internships for free helps them bypass financial barriers and get the experience they need. The goal is to help its students increase their career prospects and enhance their employability.

Academic field trips provide educational opportunities outside of the classroom, allowing for course-related experiences beyond the HUIB community. As part of its mission to blend theory with practice, the institution also sends students on academic field trips where they get to interact with industry experts and have practical experiences that build their professional skills.

An Accredited Institution

Accreditation is an incredibly important facet of education. By being accredited, an institution proves that they meet specific standards of quality education.
HUIB is one of the few private higher institutions that have been accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP) with Creation and Opening Order numbers 11/0041/MINESUP and 10/04333/L/MINESUP/DDES/ESUP/SER of August 3, 2010.

The institution was recently upgraded to a University Institute with Authorisation number 22-02654/L/MINESUP/DDES/SD-ESUP/SDA/LAN of 20 April 2022 by the Ministry of Higher Education. It should be recalled that MINESUP recently banned some institutions purporting to be professional education institutions owing to their unaccredited nature.

Experience

Professionalism comes with experience. Since 2010, HUIB has amassed a decade+ long experience when it comes to training students to become professionals. Having trained over 17,000 professionals since its inception, the out of the University Institute speaks for itself.

Graduates of the institution such as Kembe Luiza, an Electrical Engineer at Dangote Cement Cameroon, and a host of others have gone on to work at some of the most prestigious companies including NFC Bank, Ecobank, MTN Cameroon, and a host of others.

In terms of results, HUIB has lived up to its motto of Consistency, Professionalism, and Excellence. The Best Computer Science and Networks candidate for the 2022 HND examinations, Brenda Namondo, is a product of the institution. It was also ranked second-best nationwide by the Ministry of Higher Education this year and had six other academic distinctions across four departments.

Structure

Putting in place a professional structure is a key to training professionals. As part of its motto of being professional, HUIB ensures professionalism is reflected across its branding and marketing materials and activities.

The institution’s campus — located some 100 meters from Checkpoint in Buea — is far away from the noise of the town, providing a conducive learning environment for students. In a bid to help its students receive the best possible professional education, HUIB also offers free bus transportation services to students.

Professional education may have lost its place in Cameroon but HIBMAT University Institute of Buea is helping to make professional education truly professional.
HUIB has officially opened admission into its three schools on its campuses in Buea and Douala for the 2022/2023 academic year:

● Higher Institute of Business Management and Technology (HIBMAT)
● Higher Institute of Engineering and Technology (HIET)
● Higher Institute of Health Science (HIHS)
