How Some Politicians Celebrated Eid al-Fitr Across Cameroon

With Cameroon’s presidential, municipal, and parliamentary elections fast approaching, politicians are actively seeking support. On Monday, March 31, during the celebration of Eid al-Fitr—marking the end of a month of fasting—several politicians attended prayer gatherings to connect with the Muslim community.

Akere Muna Joins Local Muslim Community in Prayer

Akere Muna of the Now Movement was among the few opposition politicians who joined local prayer grounds, taking the opportunity to pray and listen to the Imam’s sermon.

“I had the privilege of attending the Muslim prayer service at the local prayer ground, where the Imam delivered a profound message centered on hope, happiness, reconciliation, and forgiveness. These values resonate deeply with us all, reminding us of the importance of unity and compassion,” Muna said.

In the spirit of the occasion, he was honoured to be invited by a Muslim family to share a meal in their home.

“Their warmth and hospitality were truly heartwarming, exemplifying the essence of Eid as a time for togetherness and generosity. May this Eid bring peace, joy, and prosperity to all. Eid Mubarak!” he added.

Buea MP Shares Food with Muslim Community in Muea

Meanwhile, beyond attending prayers, CPDM Member of Parliament for Buea Urban Constituency, Hon. Malomba Esembe, arrived bearing gifts for the Muslim community.

He joined worshippers in prayer, blending into the congregation like any other Muslim. While Buea had prayer gatherings in Buea Town, Mile 17, and Muea, Esembe chose to attend the Muea prayers.

After the prayer session, he distributed essential food items, including cooking oil, rice, and soap.

“In a world often divided, this moment reminded us that we are all God’s children, called to love and support one another beyond barriers,” he said.

“As a gesture of solidarity, I donated foodstuff to the Muslim women of the community—because when mothers have it, their husbands and children will all eat. After prayers, I shared a fellowship meal at the home of the Sarki of the Muslim community, a beautiful expression of togetherness,” he added.

While Esembe was in Muea, his CPDM colleague, the Mayor of Buea, David Mafany Namange, attended prayers at the Buea Town central mosque, commemorating the feast with the Grand Imam.

Osih, Kamto, and Libii Extend Greetings

While some politicians joined in-person celebrations, others marked the occasion with messages of goodwill.

Joshua Osih, presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Front (SDF), extended his heartfelt wishes for peace, happiness, and prosperity.

“After a month of prayer, sacrifice, and sharing, this celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the values that unite us: solidarity, tolerance, and love for one another. At a time when our country needs reconciliation and unity, I hope this celebration inspires in each of us a spirit of forgiveness and fraternity. Together, let us build a more just, peaceful, and united Cameroon,” Osih stated.

Maurice Kamto of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) also conveyed his greetings on behalf of his party’s militants, wishing all Muslims in Cameroon a happy Ramadan.

A similar message came from Cabral Libii, President of the PCRN party:

“Happy Eid al-Fitr to all our Muslim compatriots. May this moment of rejoicing, which marks the breaking of the fast of the holy month of Ramadan, be, in this year 2025, the point of transition to a new era for our country, by the Grace of God,” he said.

The Eid celebrations on Monday also marked the conclusion of Ramadan fasting, which began on March 1. Throughout the month, Muslims refrained from eating and sexual activity between dawn and sunset, fulfilling one of the five pillars of Islam. Exemptions applied to children of certain ages, pregnant women, patients, and travellers embarking on long journeys.
