Human Rights Defender Freed From Separatist Captivity In Bamenda

A human rights defender by name Jane Frances Mufua has been freed from captivity after being abducted in Bamenda, Northwest Region of Cameroon, by suspected Amba boys from her Mile Six Nkwen residence sources reported.  According to eye witnesses, she was picked up from her bedroom in the evening of Thursday, August 1, 2019, at gun point.

After threatening her son who is  just 10 with a gun,  the boy was forced by the kidnappers to take them to his mother’s room where she was taken away on a Motor Bike.  Her neighbours testified that although she was taken away before their own very eyes, and “were too scared to take any action because they do not know how the abductees will react towards them.”

They were rather shocked that by the nature of her work, promoting and defending human rights she should be the last person to be abducted. Her neighbours also expressed fears that they have all become vulnerable.
Jane Frances Mufua  for over 18 years has been active in promoting and protecting the rights of women and girls through her community activism programmes which include radio shows, training of different groups on gender-based violence (GBV),  counselling of GBV victims  amongst others with the organisation Centre for Human Rights and Peace Advocacy.

Apart from the inhuman and degrading treatment which the boys subjected her to, she was also given snake beatings on some of the most sensitive parts of her body such as her soles to the extent that she can barely walk now.
Although she has been released, she has been too traumatised to talk about her ordeal in the hands of her kidnappers.
