Human Rights Defenders need protection – Swiss embassy in Yaoundé

The Swiss embassy in Cameroon has called for the protection of those working to protect human rights within the context of the Anglophone armed conflict.

The call came after the ambassador, Martin Strub and other officials had a session with the team of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA).

“Exchange with the team of @chrda_africa on the situation of human rights defenders (HRD) and the threats they face for shedding light on the ongoing violence in the anglophone regions,” the embassy tweeted after the encounter, adding that “HRD need to be protected”.

Barrister Nkongho Félix Agbor of CHRDA described the session as interesting: “Interesting discussions with the The Ambassador of Switzerland to Cameroon; Martin Strub and his team at our headquarters in Buea. Our discussions focused on protection of Human Rights Defenders and strengthening the working relationship between CHRDA and the Swiss Embassy” he noted.

CHRDA it should be noted, is one of the most prominent human rights bodies in the affected regions. It continues to fight for the rights of victims, and has often spotlighted the atrocities of both government forces and separatist militias in their reports.
