Garoua Mourns Idrissou Bouba, Keeper of the Sporting Flame, Passes Away in Mecca

On Friday, June 20, 2025, Idrissou Bouba, coordinator of the iconic Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua, passed away in the holy city of Mecca while performing his pilgrimage. Thousands of kilometers from his homeland in northern Cameroon, Bouba’s death marks the loss of a key figure in the region’s sporting community.

A Pillar of Garoua’s Sporting Scene

Bouba was widely recognized for his quiet dedication and professionalism. For many years, he managed the logistical and operational challenges of Roumdé Adjia Stadium — a landmark renovated for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2021). Under his stewardship, the stadium hosted major continental teams and became a source of pride for Garoua residents.

“He embodied consistency, professionalism, and loyalty to Cameroonian sport,” said a local sports official. His presence was a stabilizing force in the stadium’s daily life, making him a respected figure among fans, players, and officials alike.

Revered as ‘The Keeper of the Roumdé Adjia Temple’

Often referred to affectionately as “The Keeper of the Roumdé Adjia Temple,” Bouba was more than a stadium coordinator. He was a symbol of perseverance and dedication behind the scenes. His passing has left a void in Garoua’s sports community.

“The silence in the stands now replaces the cheers and the sounds of cleats that he helped orchestrate for so long,” remarked a longtime supporter. His death during Hajj adds a spiritual dimension to his legacy, blending his personal faith with his lifelong commitment to sports.

Tributes and Next Steps

Tributes have poured in from sports authorities, local football actors, and even former Indomitable Lions players. Meanwhile, the city of Garoua now awaits the repatriation of Bouba’s body to honour Islamic rites and properly commemorate his life.

For those who knew him, Idrissou Bouba’s departure is the loss of not only a professional but also a community pillar who helped shape the identity of sport in northern Cameroon.
