Houston police Chief Art Acevedo blatantly told President Donald Trump off during a live interview with CNN’s Christian Amampour.
This was in retaliation to the President’s comments which he had made about some governors and police officers calling them weak in the face of growing racial unrest, urging them to take an aggressive stand against unruly protests.
He said if the governors didn’t take back the streets and to use force on the protesters, then they would simply look like fools. “You have to dominate. If you don’t dominate, you’re wasting your time. They’re going to run over you. You’re going to look like jerks” he stated. He later on warned he was going to send in the U.S military to end the unrests in cities across the country if the mayors and the governors don’t escalate their enforcement presence.
Quizzed about this, the Huston Police Chief was fiery in his response to the President of the U.S. “if you do not have anything constructive to say, please keep your mouth shut” he said “because you’re putting men and women in their early twenties at risk. This is not about dominating, it is about winning hearts and minds”.
Acevedo called Trump’s threats amateurish and urged the President of the U.S to start behaving like the statesman he is. He reiterated the thing America needs most at this very delicate and critical point of their history is leadership which takes to account the plight of the people.
Chief Acevedo, who was recently popularly known for joining in the protest march in Huston, said the people who are vandalising property during protests are persons who didn’t vote when the time was right, calling them to take their grievances to the ballot boxes when the time was right. He asked people not to get offended and react to the President threats.
According to him, the fight is against bad and criminal policing which American citizens and the police themselves have to set right.
