India Donates 1,000 Tonnes of Rice to Fight Food Insecurity in Cameroon

The Cameroon Government has received a donation of 1,000 tonnes of rice and medication from India to fight hunger and disease in the country where over 3 million people are facing acute food insecurity.

The consignment of 39 containers arrived at the Port of Douala on Monday, June 23.

The food and medical items were received by Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, alongside the Indian High Commissioner to Cameroon, Shri Vijay Khanduja.

According to the commissioner, the humanitarian package and relief materials handed to Cameroon are an expression of solidarity and togetherness to strengthen the partnership between the Government of Cameroon and that of India.

Meanwhile, Minister Atanga Nji appreciated Indian authorities for the huge consignment of rice and medication, which he said would be handed to flood victims in the Far North Region.

He noted that the Indian Government recently donated agricultural equipment comprising heavy-duty trucks to aid farmers in Cameroon.

While at the Douala Port, Minister Atanga Nji said the items would soon be dispatched to the various destinations.

“We are very happy. Following instructions from the port authorities, in the next 48 hours, the containers will be heading to the various destinations,” Paul Atanga Nji said.

“I want to thank the Indian government and also to reiterate that this consignment will go to the right destination,” he added.

The event proceeded with the signing of an agreement at Sawa Hotel in Douala between the minister and the Indian high commissioner.

Earlier this year, some areas in the far northern region were hard hit by floods.

However, the government has been reaching out consistently to help the population.

The donation from India is just one among the relief the affected victims have received.
