International Day of the Girl Child: Experts recommend sex education at home

In the North West region, there are recurrent cases of sexual assault on young girls by either family members, friends, or neighbors.

The phenomenon has obliged many parents and guardians to begin educating their children on sex-related issues at very tender ages.

According to Josephine Nsono, a mother and gender activist advises that parents should engage in conversations relating to children’s sexuality as early as possible.

“When my children are about 6 years old, I start telling them that this is why you have a vagina, this is why you have breast. If someone touches your vagina or if someone goes in there with their penis, that means you can have unwanted pregnancy”, she said.

Other women rights activists say knowing what information you give a young girl at every stage of growth is necessary because it creates a very conducive environment for the children to be able to discuss sex issues with parents.

They emphasize that if this is done, it reduces the rate of sexual assault on the girl child.

The education of girls in the Northwest is said to be decreasing while sexual abuse is on the rise. This phenomenon has been linked to the current crisis which has rendered girls most vulnerable.

In the history of conflict worldwide, the girl child has always been a target although they are not always the cause of the fighting.
