Is Biya Unhappy With the Celebrations of His 42 Years in Power?

On November 6, 2024, Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, marked 42 years in power. Supporters and sympathisers of the ruling Cameroon’s People Democratic Movement (CPDM) party across the nation marked the day with celebrations.

They dressed in party uniforms, gathered, sang songs, and tried to enumerate Biya’s achievements.

That was the atmosphere in Buea, Bamenda, Yaounde, Maroua, and Baffoussam, among other regional headquarters.

They equally sent a motion of support to Paul Biya, with some calling him to be their candidate in the next presidential elections.

Paul Biya Silent on His Anniversary

Despite the nationwide celebrations, 91-year-old President Paul Biya did not say a word.

His silence on his anniversary in power has raised concerns about his continued stay in power. Many are wondering if it could be that he is unhappy staying in power.

The majority of Cameroonian youths have known only one president, Paul Biya.

One might argue that Biya does not celebrate these kinds of events. But when it is his birthday, he celebrates by communing with his family and cutting birthday cake.

But when it comes to his ascension to power and the CPDM anniversaries, he goes silent.

Could it be that it is because he inherited the presidency and CPDM by the choice of his predecessor?

Despite maintaining sealed lips, Biya is among the first African presidents to send a message of congratulations to Donald Trump, who has been elected President of the United States of America.

He recently returned to Cameroon after a long stay abroad, during which many had speculated that he was unwell.

Even as the presidential elections approach in 2025, Biya has yet to comment on whether he will stand or not.

He came to power on November 6, 1982, following the resignation of President Amadou Ahijou. Biya was Cameroon’s Prime Minister at the time. But since the constitution outlined the PM as successor, he ascended to high office in the nation. Since then, he has ruled twice the time his predecessor took.
