Le feu est parti d’un magasin de stockage de carburant frelaté et s’est rapidement répandu aux commerces environs. La mobilisation des populations de l’arrondissement de Koutaba, dans le département du Noun, n’a pas suffit pour venir à bout des flammes géantes. Ces dernières ont réduit en cendre près de dix maisons et commerces. Selon les populations, on aurait pû éviter ce bilan lourd si le département du Noun disposait d’une unité de sapeurs pompiers, ce qui n’est pas le cas.
