Kumba massacre: Bar Association calls for investigations, tightened security around campuses

The Cameroon Bar Association has said government should tighten security around schools and children’s playgrounds as well as investigate Saturday’s killings in Kumba.

“While awaiting the results of the investigation which will establish the responsibilities and bring before the judicial authorities the authors of these despicable acts so that they are judged in accordance with the laws of the Republic,” stated the Bar in a release.

The Cameroon Bar has described the killing of seven school children at Mother Francisca school as odious and barbaric, adding that nothing could justify the atrocity.

“For the Cameroon Bar Association, no fight, no cause, no argument can justify this act which is both odious and barbaric, criminal and cowardly.
“It invites the public authorities to ensure in a particular way the security around the establishments in the NOSO,” a release from the body states.

In solidarity with victims of the incident, the Bar’s executive has said lawyers should observe a minute of silence before court proceedings tomorrow.

The Bar Association also regretted that children, who need protection the most, are rather becoming targets of “unacceptable violence”.
“In its reaction to the sad events of Kumba, The Cameroon Bar brings out the preamble to the United Nations convention; relative to the rights of the child of November 20, 1989.

The text states that “the child, because of his lack of physical and intellectual maturity needs special protection and special care.”
Authorities are called upon to take special security measures around schools and Children should no longer suffer the “unacceptable violence of individuals with ulterior motives,” the Bar’s release read partly read.
