Kumba: Reckless military truck crushes bike rider to death, leaves passenger critically wounded

A bike rider has been crushed to death with a female passenger seriously wounded in Kumba, Meme division of the South West region of Cameroon, MMI has gathered.

The yet to be identified victims were hit by a military truck in an accident blamed on the military for reckless driving.

They were reportedly rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries where the commercial bike rider finally died.

The incident occured Thursday February 16, 2023 when a convoy of military trucks was heading for Buea, Capital of the South West region.

Locals say the military men onboard showed no remorse and continued as if nothing had happened, provoking a protest from the local population.

“………military convoy hit these people and just continued their mission to Buea without stopping to check the situation of the victims,” an eyewitness told MMI.

The military vehicle according to the eye witness violated the high way code crossing to the opposite lane, leading to the accident.

“The military men were in a convoy of about 13 cars .They left their lane of the road and entered the other lane,” he narrated adding that, “The bike rider and the passenger were unnoticed and the military with their high speed hit them and continued going as if nothing happened.”

The incident provoked anger and protest from Kumba denizens, questioning such recklessness from the military who are supposed to ensure the safety of all Cameroonians.

“These people (military) are wicked,” a voice is overheard in a viral video as the wails struggling to rush the victims to a nearby health facility.

“The bike rider died and the passenger seriously injured. We don’t know if she will survive,” said local who assisted in taking them to the hospital.

“I wish the minister of defense to know that these military men are causing harm to civilians,” he added stressing that, “We are all Cameroonians and because someone is holding a gun doesn’t give him more power over the population because the population is the government.”
