Kumbo-Ndop road explosion injures three soldiers, damages military vehicle

Three elements of Cameroon’s elite unit, the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) have been injured in what is believed to be another separatist attack.

The three were among a unit of soldiers travelling on the Kumbo-Ndop Highway in the conflict-hit North West Region yesterday.

Along the road, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) believed to have been set off by separatist fighters injured the soldiers and left a truck destroyed.

Yesterday’s attack was one of many involving IEDs, as the armed conflict is taking a different turn. The use of explosive devices is fast becoming the main mode of attack by separatists, who often carry out hit and run attacks on soldiers.

Kumbo, in the North West Region, it should be noted, remains one of other towns with the most clashes. Last week, an IED went off close to the Nso fon’s palace shortly after the traditional ruler called on separatists to drop their arms.

Despite the killing of several separatist leaders in the town over the past months by the army, gun battles continue to rock the town leaving civilians caught in the crossfire.
