Legislative election rerun: SDF harvests no seat

The Social Democratic Front (SDF) party will have to participate at the national assembly for the tenth legislature with five parliamentarians.

The MPs were voted during the legislative and municipal elections of February 9th 2020.
All hopes by the party headed by Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi to increase the number of parliamentary seats during the legislative election rerun of March 22nd have been dashed to the wall.

Following results of the election rerun made public by the constitutional council Tuesday April 7th 2020, the Cameroon People Democratic Movement (CPDM) won all 13 parliamentary seats in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.

As if the SDF forecasted the outcome of the polls, militants boycotted a session for the proclamation of the results. Earlier, they refused to attend a session at the constitutional council to examine petitions despite haven filed petitions contesting the polls.

SDF did not equally take part in the activities of the national commission for the final vote counting following petitions it tabled that the legislative election rerun was marked by insecurity that prevented many of their militants from casting their votes in Lebialem, Momo, Menchum, Mezam and Bui divisions.

To the party, confrontations between the military and separatist fighters scared many from fulfilling their civic responsibility.

In a press conference granted by the first vice president of the SDF, Joshua Oshih, he acknowledged that the playground was not level for all to cast their votes in fairness but pointed that SDF has accepted results from the constitutional council in a republican spirit.

With five parliamentary seats even after the election rerun, SDF has therefore definitely lost a chance of forming a parliamentary group at the national assembly. During the last legislature, SDF had a parliamentary group with 18 parliamentarians.

To some political analysts, it will be pretty difficult for the views of the SDF to go through at the national assembly this time with just five MPs out of the 180 MPs. The CPDM party is the lone party with a parliamentary group with 152 parliamentarians.
