Legislative Elections: Constitutional Council Orders Rerun in 11 Constituencies in North West, South West

After a long day today, the Constitutional Council has finally ruled that a re-run of February 9 elections be done in some parts of the North West and South West regions.

The municipal and legislative elections are set to be redone in 11 different constituencies following post-electoral litigations ruled upon.

The SDF National Communication Secretary, Denis Nkemlemo earlier today told MMI the decision affects particularly the Lebialem Division in the South West Region.

According to Barrister Njeje, lawyer of the SDF at the Constitutional Council, the major reason for the cancellation was because of the location of polling stations.

“They took the polling centres far away from the people … For example in Pinyin the people had to trek and on that day movement was prohibited … So how do you expect people to move 20km?”

“With the perilous situation on the ground, can that be an election?” The lawyer questioned further.

In the North West, the constituencies affected he explained included “Bui, Menchum North, Menchum South, Momo East and West, Mezam,” among others.

With respect to a re-run being organised in these areas however, Barrister Njeje says “we are not the organisers, everybody has to play their own part.”

The SDF party he added was partially satisfied with the results as some of their petitions were thrown out including those in Fako East and Buea Rural.

Immediately after the voting process, however, Minister Atanga Nji and ELECAM had said the elections were a hundred per cent successful in the two restive regions.
