Manchester City take a giant leap towards the English Premier League Title with a 4-1 thrashing of leaders Arsenal

Manchester City has laid an emphatic claim on this year’s English Premier League Title with a convincing victory over Arsenal at the Etihad. Today’s victory over Arsenal means that City’s fate is firmly in their control with their two games in hand. City now stands at 73 points with Arsenal at 75.

City led championship rivals Arsenal 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from De Bruyne and Stones. Seven minutes into the game, the Belgium international broke the deadlock by rushing onto Haaland’s pass and shooting the ball into the bottom corner. Haaland then had two excellent chances to extend City’s lead. White stopped a close-range shot before Ramsdale made two outstanding saves. After dribbling past a couple of defenders, the former Bournemouth player did well to push a low shot away from danger. Gundogan found Haaland with a cross-box pass, but the goalkeeper denied him once more. He couldn’t, though, prevent Stones from scoring with a powerful header after receiving a free kick from De Bruyne.

Haaland and De Bruyne connected for the second time nine minutes after the restart, with the Belgium international sprinting down the left side of the box before curling in his effort.
Arsenal defender Holding equalised for the Gunners in the 86th minute. Trossard drove into the box from the right side and slid a pass into Holding’s path. The centre-back was unmarked in the middle and sent a shot past Ederson.

Holding scored a consolation goal before Haaland scored his 49th goal of the season across all competitions. Foden found the deadly striker, who blasted his shot past Ramsdale.

Manchester City has won seven Premier League games in a row for the first time since a 12-match winning streak from November 2021 to January 2022.

Arsenal are the only team since Arsenal themselves in March 2008 to go four consecutive Premier League games winless (D3 L1) while starting the day top for each match. Arsenal finished third at the end of the season after drawing four in a row.

Erling Haaland of Manchester City scored his 33rd Premier League goal of the season, the most any player has scored in a 38-game Premier League season. Only Andrew Cole (34 goals) in 1993-94 and Alan Shearer (34 goals) in 1994-95 have scored more in a season.
