Many Feared Dead as Police Car Collides With Truck

A number of people are feared to have lost their lives in a car accident, involving a police car on National Road number 3, linking Cameroon’s biggest cities – Douala and Yaounde.

The accident occurred Friday afternoon near the small town of Boumnyebel, in the Center Region.

A police car reportedly collided head-on with a heavy-duty truck transporting palm nuts, MMI has learnt.

Images on social networks showed a racked police car with people trying to pull out victims from inside.

At the moment, we cannot tell the cause of the accident.

In a video circulating on social media showing the accident scene, a narrator could be heard saying five people were in the police car, including the driver.

The number of casualties has not been confirmed, but Douala-based Equinox Television said several people have died.

This accident comes as the country is still mourning at least 11 people killed in a landslide on the Dschang Cliff in the West Region.

Search operations are going on at the site, as several people are believed to still be buried in rubble, three days since the landslide.

Road accidents are a major cause of deaths and injuries in Cameroon, largely due to the delapidated nature of the road infrastructure. Despite being in power for 42 years, the Biya administration has done nothing to improve the conditions of the country’s roads.
