Maroua: Bike riders march against planned CRM protest

Several commercial motorbike riders have taken to the streets of Maroua, Far North region of Cameroon to renew their support for the government of the day.

The riders say the move this Sunday is meant to express their dissatisfaction with a September 22 protest planned by the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, CRM.

With Kamto’s planned protest prohibited by administrative officials, government has been using other means to ensure it doesn’t go through.

Many have accused the ruling CPDM party of paying bike riders to stage the Maroua protest, one similar to that held in Douala days back.

Among reasons for which the CRM protest was banned is the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. Many have raised concerns over the fairness of the decision, given that progovernment protests by the commercial motorbike riders are not being restricted for the same reason.

Ahead of Tuesday’s protest, Cameroonians have been holding solidarity marches in the diaspora since yesterday.
