Martinez Zogo case: Equinoxe TV journalist Guy Zogo reportedly facing death threats

By Tata Mbunwe

Guy Zogo, journalist of Douala-based television station, Equinoxe, has reportedly admitted he has been facing death threats concerning his reporting on the Martinez Zogo case.

The journalist is quoted to have said he has received threats of kidnap and poisoning due to his continuous quest for justice for radio host Martinez Zogo, who was brutality murdered and mutilated last month.

During one of its newscasts on Monday, Equinoxe TV said Guy Zogo will not be bullied into silence, but will continue seeking justice for the murdered journalist.

“Who killed Martinez Zogo? This is the only concern of Guy Zogo, who, beyond the image, will continue to report. We will not fall into the mire of abjectness and dishonour. Who killed Martinez Zogo? You won’t cut Guy Zogo’s tongue out, who will not stop asking this question,” an Equinoxe presenter said, in a message she read during a newscast yesterday.

“In a theatre of operations, the journalist (Guy Zogo) has several sources at his disposal and it is the credibility of his source that allows him to make the information he receives public. Guy Zogo is no exception to this role,” the media organ furthered.

Equinoxe TV said the message was a reply to the lawyer of one of the suspects who have been arrested for Martinez Zogo’s murder.

On Saturday, Barrister Charles Tchoungang, lawyer of Jean Pierre Amougou Belinga, one of the prime suspects arrested in the case, blasted Guy Zogo for spreading false information against his client.

He told the public at a press conference to pay no attention to media messages, stating they were all skewed towards making Amougou Belinga guilty of a crime he did not commit.

However, Martinez Zogo’s family lawyer, Calvin Job, at another press conference on Monday, lauded the media for teaming up to seek justice for the journalist who was brutally killed.

He also revealed ongoing threats against the late journalist’s widow, Diane Zogo, whom, he said, was attacked two weeks back and her vehicle vandalised.

Several high ranking people have been arrested for their suspected participation in Martinez Zogo’s murder, among them Amougou Belinga, owner of l’Anecdot Media Group; the Director of the General Directorate for External Research (DGRE), Maxime Eko Eko, among others.

Pressure has also been mounting on the Minister of Justice, Laurent Esso, to resign from his post, after one of the suspects testified that he gave final orders for Martinez Zogo’s abductors to “finish him”.
