Massive arrest in Anglophone regions ahead of Sunday’s elections

Ambazonia fighters have announced a lockdown to take effect from the 7th of February in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.

The lockdown they say is meant to disrupt the twin elections scheduled for Sunday February 9.

The threats and even cases of torture have however not stopped some political parties from partaking in the exercise.

Just two days to the election proper, massive arrests are reportedly taking place in different parts of the restive Anglophone regions.

In Wotutu in the South West region, a resident said over 300 young men have been arrested and taken away.

“the search still continues right now” he added.

Similar arrests are reportedly being made in other areas such as Kumbo in the Bui division, coming just days after hundreds of young men in Bamenda were also arrested.

Unlike previous routine checks by the police, arrests are being made regardless of the whether individuals posses national identity cards or not.

Coming just days after intense military raids in rural areas, many say the action is set to make citizens in the two English Speaking regions less likely to partake in the exercise.

Following the launch of the electoral campaign last week, videos have emerged on social media showing persons in the Anglophone regions being tortured by suspected Ambazonian fighters for taking part in them.
