Comedian, Caro (Mbeng Lilian), in her maiden movie, ‘Settled’, delivers a powerful portrayal of marital strife that has captivated Cameroonian audiences with its relatable storyline and intense performances.
Lilian (who stars as Arrah) makes life hellish for her husband, Seehofer Roland (Ntumfoin), who falls from financial grace after losing his investments.
Disgusted with having to be the breadwinner of the house for three months, Arrah exhibits unacceptable behaviour, including denying her husband basic comforts like food and intimacy, ultimately driving him out of their home.
A gentle but no-nonsense Seehofer finds solace and companionship in Malvis-Ann Mohvu, Arrah’s best friend, further complicating the narrative.
The film’s serious tone and concise scenes effectively communicate the gravity of the issues being addressed.
Known for her comedy role, Caro, where she plays a competitive and troublesome woman, Mbeng Lilian’s performance in ‘Settled’ as the brutal and disdainful wife is quite compelling.
She continuously berates Seehofer, his husband-turned-wife, publicly and privately, for his financial failure, establishing the film’s tension from the very first scene.
“I just want my husband to be a man. I didn’t get married to a vegetable,” she tells Malvis-Ann in the first scene.
Taking advice from his friend and co-worker, Christian Bate, Seehofer attempts to reclaim his role as the head of the household, only to be met with further insults.
He is being called a lazy and poor man, although he educated his wife, who was a “common PTA teacher”, and made her what she is.
But the cold-blooded Lilian doesn’t care, until she loses the best man she has ever had.
This portrayal of marital frustration, desperation, and emotional betrayal has resonated with many Cameroonians, who took to social media to praise the film’s classic storytelling style.
Directed by Enow Bismarck, “Settled” is a concise exploration of modern marital dynamics, where financial viability often overshadows love and affection in determining spousal behavior.
It is also an appeal for couples to cherish and support each other for better and for worse.
But instead of offering a direct solution to the marital turmoil, the film exposes infidelity and divorce as evidence and consequences of unresolved marital issues.
Its relatable plot and melodramatic scenes make it a compelling watch; plus it leaves audiences guessing who the actual protagonist is.
Less than 24 hours after its release on YouTube, ‘Settled’ garnered over 30,000 views, a rapid success for a Cameroonian film.
‘Settled’ is a breakthrough for Mbeng Lilian and her newfound ML Productions. It showcases her range as an actress and her ability to tackle complex roles.
The film’s thought-provoking ending has solidified its place as a standout piece in Cameroonian cinema.
