Media: Ahmadou Vamoulké Clocks 2,000 Days Behind Bars as Controversial Court Case Stalls

The Former Director General of the Cameroon Radio Television Ahmadou Vamoulké, is now in his sixth year of detention since his arrest in 2016.

The court is yet to rule over his case.

The case of the former CRTV Director General has suffered 88 adjournments, and his lawyers have accused the Cameroon justice system of doing very little to hasten the process.

The Journalist was arrested after being fired in 2016 from his position as the Director General of the CRTV, for mismanagement of public funds during his tenure at the helm of the institution.

His lawyers have argued against these claims and reiterated that no concrete proof has been provided. However, their client has remained behind bars despite the said lack of evidence.

“Over the years, we have proven that the accusations are not factual… Every hearing has been adjourned several times for the accuser to present their witnesses or to prove that there is a case against Mr. Vamoulké,” revealed one of his lawyers on french outlet RFI.

Vamoulke’s lawyers have also claimed that the Cameroonian Government is “beating time and hoping for him to die in detention, or to be struck down by a serious illness, because this case will never be closed”.

Ahmadou Vamoulké has been at the Yaoundé Kondengui Maximum Prison since his arrest in 2016, despite having not been sentenced and his case adjourned a record 88 times.

Several calls have been made over the years for the release of the former CRTV Director General to no avail. His case is one of many others of journalists incarcerated without conviction in Cameroon.

It should be known that Cameroon has been classified as one of the highest Jailers of Journalists in the world and in Subsaharan Africa.
