Military, population collaborating in search of seven abducted students in Oku

There has been no idea as to where to get seven students of Government Bilingual High School Oku kidnapped Thursday, January 28th, 2021.

“The villagers and military are collaborating in the search to get the students. No trace of the students has been noticed in the forests visited so far but all hopes are not lost,” a native of Oku, Bui Division in the North West Region of Cameroon told Mimi Mefo Info in a telephone interview Friday, January 29th.

The people of Oku, though noted in Cameroon for their mystical prowess, a reliable source says people have opted not to invoke mystical powers in the search for the students.

The students from different classes were taken by unknown armed men in the early hours of Thursday on campus.

Following the kidnap, many students and teachers opted to stay in their houses today Friday for security reasons.

This is the second mass kidnap in Oku. Last year, over a dozen primary school pupils, were kidnapped and later release.

In all these cases, they are pointing accusing fingers at separatist fighters.

Neither the ministry of secondary education nor the government has issued an official statement on the taking away of the students.

The kidnapping of students, pupils, and teachers have been frequent in the anglophone regions where people are fighting for independence. The fighters want a complete boycott of schools to weaken the government’s rule in the area.
