Residents of Bafut Cameroon’s North West region say they had “a terrible weekend” due to a military raid that has ensued till this morning.
Government soldiers stormed the village on Sunday, carrying out indiscriminate arrests on locals.
Talking to MMI, a source says the raid later escalated leaving many in fear. In Mankwi 10, a locality in the area, arrested civilians were later set free, the source says.
However, “houses were razed and stores looted. In another locality towards Mambu hospital, many were taken and one was killed” he explains.
Soldiers he adds continued breaking into homes and bars yesterday evening “consuming what ever drink they found.”
“They have burned a house where the Catholic Christians formally gathered for mass” he explains further.
Bafut is one of several villages in the Anglophone regions that has paid the price for the ongoing crisis in the English-speaking regions of the country.
Despite government promise to prosecute soldiers accused of rights abuses in the North West, more of these rights violations are still being reported.
