Military Ramps Up Raids In North West Villages As Election Day Narrows

Inhabitants of Babessi in the North West Region are in for another rough evening due to an ongoing military raid.

“There are gunshots now in Babessi. The people are now running into the bush,” says a source who adds that “My family and I are in the bushes”.

A similar report is being made by inhabitants of Awing, still in the North West.

“Three Military trucks entered Awing this morning and are moving from one quarter to another doing what they know best,” a resident told MMI earlier today.

The population at the time of the raid, the source adds, was in panic and indoors.

One house was set ablaze by the soldiers, MMI has now learnt.

“Others are fleeing into the bushes because of the fear of the unknown,” a local adds.

Today’s raid is a continuation of others on several villages in the Anglophone regions ahead of the February 9 elections.
