Mimi Mefo Info (MMI)’s fifth anniversary: 2023 year in review

The year 2023 may not be over yet, but it’s never too early to look back at how much the Mimi Mefo Info (MMI) team has accomplished over the year thus far. From our most viewed articles to live events and interviews, we have covered and the interactions with our readers via social media.

MMI’s mission is to “report the news with objectivity, aiming to encourage freedom of the press and expression, hold authorities to account, and encourage a system of citizen journalism where Cameroonians from all walks of life can get their stories told.” This year has been no stranger to this goal.

For example, the opportunity to conduct exclusive interviews with Cameroonian notables such as the Fon of Big Babanki (Kedjom Keku), a village in Tubah Subdivision, Mezam Division of the North-West Region. In which he discussed the “prevailing security situation in his Fondom.” His interview sparked debate among readers and commentators on social media, especially Facebook.

From Bertrand Apene, “Two wrongs can never make a right. We continue giving justifications for human life as if they are going to come back to life.”

As well as Cameroonian politician, Michèle Ndoki who spoke with MMI after she was permanently expelled from her party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM). In which the audience was able to submit their own questions before and during the live interview to directly be involved in the unfolding story.

And exclusive coverage of the Late John Fru Ndi’s funerals in his native village, Baba II, Bamenda, and Manchester, UK.

Not only has MMI continued to bring up-to-date and breaking Cameroonian news but also from all around Africa. Such as multiple reports on the unfolding political situation in Senegal. And how Black footballers in Europe face racism in the sport.

This year the MMI team also had the opportunity to report live from many cultural events. Including the Akum Welfare Association International Cultural Convention in London, UK. A historic event as it was the first time that The Fon of Akum HRH Fon George Ndikum visited the UK, in which he was able to share his message of culture and community, “always remember where you are coming from…and endeavour to engage in the development of your community.” Again, thousands of people were able to take part in the event which was streamed on Facebook and YouTube, and they did not disappoint in the comments.

And Ntoh Elias, “This is beautiful, a warm applause to the organizing committee.”

Social media especially Facebook and Twitter have given people the ability to share their opinions and comment on articles and repost news. And this year we were able to expand our network to LinkedIn and the new social media platform Threads, which was launched in early July.

We celebrate the 5^th anniversary of MMI by looking back at some of the highlights this year has already had to offer and looking forward to the future and all that is to come.
