Mob tortures bike rider for recklessly crossing railway line in Yaounde

A bike rider commonly known in Cameroon as “Okada rider” and two of his passengers cheated death on Saturday at Rail Abattoir, an area in Yaounde, the political capital of Cameroon.

At about midday, the commercial bike rider and his passengers violated the instructions of a traffic controller, passing across a railway track as a train approached.

“They tried to stop him but he already passed. The train missed them by a few centimeters” an onlooker noted.

The driver was okay, but both passengers were left scared and almost unconscious.

“They crossed successfully and the two passengers fainted. It took around 30 minutes or so for them to be revived due to the shock and fear of the fact that they could have been crushed by the train” the onlooker explains.

After the passengers were revived, angry observers took out their anger on the bike rider.

“He was dealt with. He was given snake beatings by the angry population … As they were struggling to revive the passengers others were beating the bike man and he was only rescued by the security officers at the railway” comments our source.

“The incident caused traffic congestion restricting movement for some time” he adds.

Yesterday’s incident adds to the several challenges faced by highway users in the country. It also raises concerns over road practices by its users in the capital city and the country at large. In parts of some major town of the country, commercial motor bikes have been banned altogether, a decision often attributed to recklessness and disorder they cause.
