Mr Ibu’s daughter criticized for taking over his TikTok account

By Washira Helene

The sudden demise of renowned Nollywood actor John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr. Ibu, has been clouded by controversy surrounding the management of his TikTok account.

Mr Ibu died of cardiac arrest at a Lagos hospital on Saturday evening after battling with illness for several months.

The legendary comic actor underwent a leg amputation months ago and was seemingly recovering. His death left his Nollywood colleagues and fans across Africa and the world in shock.

Within hours of the news of Mr. Ibu’s passing, his adopted daughter, Jasmine Okafor, made significant changes to the account, leading to public outrage and accusations of exploiting her late father’s digital legacy.

The TikTok account, formerly named “@realmribu,” boasting over 1.1 million followers, underwent a swift transformation, with Jasmine renaming it to “@LadyJasminec_live” and altering the content to feature primarily her own videos.

This swift action has triggered strong reactions from Mr. Ibu’s fans, who criticize Jasmine for what they perceive as disrespecting her father’s memory and capitalizing on his online presence for personal benefit.

Despite the widespread condemnation on social media, Jasmine has remained silent on the matter.

This has added fuel to the online discussions about digital legacy and the ethical considerations surrounding the management of social media accounts after the death of a loved one.

The controversy has sparked debates on proper mourning etiquette, with many asserting that this is not the time for self-promotion.

Comments on social media platforms have expressed disappointment in Jasmine’s actions.

“It’s important to mourn with respect and dignity. This is not the time for self-promotion,” Joshua wrote on Facebook.

Social media users have echoed these sentiments, with many calling the move “insensitive” and “disgraceful.”

Some have even questioned whether Jasmine had proper authorization to make such changes to the account.

“This girl is evil. I’ve never liked her. Now she has come out clear to show how bad she is. At this speed, she might start claiming his properties,” Jessica reacted on X, formerly Twitter.

“This girl is an opportunist. See how quick she is taking over Mr Ibu’s things. What a shame!” FruDenis on X added.

Jasmine is reportedly the one who created Mr Ibu’s TikTok account and has since then been the one managing it.

As his adopted child, she has been accused of being a big problem in his life rather than a blessing. She’s even being accused of sleeping with him, mismanaging the funds raised for his surgery and many more.

Jasmine has come out on several occasions to deny such accusations claiming she’s has never gone intimate with him or misused any funds allocated to him.
