Muyuka District Hospital nurses embark on strike action over poor working conditions, patients stranded

By David Atangana

Nurses of Muyuka District Hospital in Fako Division, South West Region of Cameroon have taken to the streets to decry poor management and low pay.

The health workers suspended work to vent their anger since March 31, 2023.

Carrying placards with various messages directed to the concerned hospital management, the nurses say they are fighting for their rights and transparency in the government run health establishment.

“Enough is enough, give nurses their rights. Nurses are not robots,” one of the placards reads.

Another says, “Nurses should be treated with respect by the Doctors.”

Chanting protest songs infront of the hospital, the disgruntled nurses complain of lack of transparency in management.

“We need transparency in the hospital,” they said adding that, “we need our quarterly staff meeting in the hospital.”

They are also demanding better pay.

The strike action is negatively affecting the local population who needs health care.

The lives of patients are now in danger in the facility as nurses are unavailable for work, our source added.

“When you get admitted, no one is there to administer treatment,” local lamented adding that: “it has been like that since they started their strike action.”

At the time of this report, the grievances advanced by the nurses had not been addressed.
