Nearly 200 people have been killed since January in “an alarming increase in attacks” by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militia in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN says. According to the UN refugee agency, 40,000 had been forced to flee their homes during the same period in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces. At least 114 people with albinism have disappeared in Mozambique over the past seven years, the southern African country’s human rights commission says. There are 55 ongoing criminal proceedings related to the disappearances. People with the condition are often killed in East and southern Africa, their body parts used in charms which are believed to bring luck in love and fortune.
South Africa’s apartheid-era President FW de Klerk has been diagnosed with cancer, according to his foundation. It said the former president was found with “mesothelioma, which is a cancer that affects the tissue that lines the lungs”. Mr De Klerk, the last white man to lead South Africa, turned 85 on Thursday. The foundation said he would start a course of immunotherapy next week.
