Rice farmers in Ndop, Ngoketunjia Division in the North West Region of Cameroon are calling on administrative authorities of the region to caution herdsmen that have been intruding into their farms thereby threatening the proper germination of their crops.
“The herdsmen with their cows moved into some farms destroying crops . This is a serious threat to our activity that is farming,” a farmer told a local reporter in Ndop.
Visiting Ngoketunjia Division Tuesday, March 9, 2021, the governor of the North West Region held a brief meeting with the herdsmen in a bid to defuse tensions.
Governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique in an action of solidarity prayed with the herdsmen while advising them and farmers to each respect their area of activity.
Ndop is expected to host a ceremony for the launching of the 2021 farming session in Cameroon by the minister of agriculture and rural development.
Ahead of that, tractors and other agricultural equipment have been levelling and expanding land for the cultivation of rice. This is done under the supervision of the Upper Noun Valley Development Authority (UNVDA).
A farmer/grazier conflict is already causing enormous material and human damages in Nwa subdivision in Donga Mantung Division in the North West.
Administrative authorities will not want such a scenario to unfold in any other area.
